    Employees are entitled to 6 working days of paid time off per year. However, is common practice to grant up to 6 weeks of vacation after a year of employment.

    Individual Income Tax

    In Nigeria the Individual Income tax range is between 7% and 24% will depend on the income of the employee.

    Employer cost

    The employer cost range is 12% of the employee salary, plus a fixed cost of the worker insurance.

    Probation Period

    The minimum probation period is 3 months, and the maximum 6 months.

    Minimum Wage Requirements

    The National Minimum Wage in Nigeria is NGN 30,000 per month.

    Maximum working hours and overtime

    Working hours are fixed by mutual agreement and mentioned in the employment agreement. Is common practice to establish a maximum of 40 hours a week, from Monday to Friday.

    There is no rate for overtime, the rate or benefit granted for working extra hours should be specified in the employment agreement.

    Sick leave

    In Nigeria, employees will be paid up to 12 days in a calendar year during absence from work caused by illness. An official certificate from a doctor must be provided.

    The insurance provided by the employer shall cover at least: specialist consultations, up to 15 days of hospitalization, preventive care, medicines, dental care, ophthalmological services, among others.

    Parental Leave

    • Maternity leave: employees are entitled to 12 weeks of leave, which will be divided into 6 weeks before the child is born and 6 weeks after. If the employee has worked not less than 6 months before the leave, at least 50% of the salary will be paid by the employer.
    • Paternity leave: by law employees are not entitled to leave. However, is common practice to grant 2 to 3 weeks of paid leave by the employer.

    Termination requirements for employees in

    Given notice is mandatory, also, employers are required to state valid reasons for the termination.


    For employees that are covered by the Labor Act, redundancy pay is mandatory. However, the law does not stipulate the amount to be paid. For employees not covered in the Labor Act, severance will depend on the employment agreement.

    Notice Period

    The notice period will vary depending on the length of service:

    • Less than 3 months of employment - 1 day of notice.
    • Less than 2 years of employment - 1 week of notice.
    • Less than 5 years of employment - 2 weeks of notice.
    • Over 5 years of employment - 1 month of notice.
