    Paid Time Off

    In Latvia full time and part time employees are entitled to 28 calendar days of paid time off, that represents 20 working days. Paid time off is calculated as 1.67 paid days or 2.33 calendar days.

    Employees are entitled to time off after 6 months worked.

    There are 15 public holidays per year. If the public falls on the weekend, the next working day is free.

    Employer Cost

    The employer cost range in Latvia is 24 % of employee's salary

    Individual Income Tax

    The individual income tax rates on a yearly personal income:

    • 20% on incomes up to EUR 20,004 per year.
    • 23% on incomes from EUR 20,004.01 to EUR 62,800 per year.
    • 31.4% for incomes over EUR 62,800 per year.

    Employment contract details

    Employee agreements must be signed at least the day before the start date. The contract should include personal information of the employee and employer, length of the agreement, probation and notice period among others.

    Probation Period

    Maximum probation period in Latvia is 3 months.

    Termination of probation period

    At the end of the probationary period, the Employee will be informed in writing if he/she has successfully completed the Employee’s probationary period.

    Minimum Wage Requirements

    Minimum Wage in Latvia is 500 EUR monthly gross.

    Maximum working hours

    Standard working hours are 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week from Monday to Friday.

    Parental Leave

    For both leaves, the State Social Insurance Agency will be responsible for the payment.

    • Maternity benefit: expectant or adoptive employees in Latvia are granted with 56 calendar days before childbirth and 56 calendar days after. A total of 112 calendar days of leave. For medical reasons parental leave may be granted a 14-day-long additional parental leave. If two or more children were born 14 calendar days will be added and the employee will be granted with 126 calendar days of leave.
    • Paternity leave: employees are entitled to 10 calendar days of leave after the child is born. This leave also applies for adopted children up to 18 years old. Employees can choose a period to take paternity leave until the child is 1 and a half years old.

    Sick Leave

    For the first day, the employee won’t get paid. However, from the 2nd day up to the 10th day the employer must pay the leave as 75% for 2nd and 3rd day, and 80% for the 4th until the 10th day of the average earnings. From the 11th day, the State Social Insurance Agency will be responsible for the payment.

    Termination requirements for employees

    Contracts may be terminated by employer and employee written agreement without cause. An employer can initiate the termination of their employment relationship only if any of the justified causes established by Labour Law section 101. Terminations without cause are not valid.

    Notice Period

    Notice period is 1 month and must be in writing. During probation period, notice period is 3 days.
