How do you get back on track with your business after being gone or away? The process we are going to share here is valuable to anyone, remote workers, freelancers or even business owners.
There is one thing you need to keep in mind
It’s essential to plan your time and tasks before as well as after your time off in advance. Imagine running multiple projects at once and going away for one week. During that time a lot of things can happen, and you can easily get lost once you come back. Outlining everything in detail can save you the stress.
Making the “Going away” document
Even if everything seems crystal clear at the moment, detailing your current projects is key. You will be amazed at how much you can forget in just a few days away from your desk.
Break down your work like this:
Before going away:
- Projects/Client work to be completed with as many details as possible
While you are away:
- Projects/Client work in progress (and fill out what should be done while you’re gone if you have a team or someone covering for you)
After you come back:
- Projects/Client work next steps after you return with as many details as possible
Organize your calendar for the time after you return
- Block some time to catch up and review the plan
- Pre-book necessary check-ins with your team, clients, etc.
You are probably thinking right now: Why do I need this when I am already using a project management tool for that?
The answer is simple: Because you will be overwhelmed with notifications. You will spend a lot of time going through all the comments, and it’s a slippery slope to confusion. Instead of that, go to your plan and come back to the exact point where you left off.
We have prepared a template for you to use for any time you’re going away. Feel free to use it and tailor to your needs. Just click on File > Make a copy and put it in your account.
As a few holidays are coming up, we wanted to make sure you are on top of your tasks when you come back! Give this a go and let us know what you think!
Have fun and stay productive!
